A Public Health Crisis
It’s no secret that the national drug epidemic is taking a huge toll on Oregon’s residents. But Portland and its surrounding area has particularly affected by the state’s addiction crisis: in Multnomah County, ambulances responded to over a dozen calls per week for opioid overdoses in 2014, and about two people in the county died every week from an opioid overdose. Portland has had a reputation as “Heroin City” for years as the state’s largest heroin import hub, and in 2014, more than half of all heroin-related deaths in Oregon were in Multnomah County.
Central Oregon has also been hit hard: between 2013 and 2014, heroin arrests made by the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office have doubled. Overall in 2015, over 233,000 Oregon residents abused or were dependent on alcohol and almost 100,000 Oregonians were dependent on illegal drugs. People living in Portland or other central Oregon locations who are seeking recovery from opioids, alcohol, or any other addictive drug should have hope: there’s effective treatment for addiction available not too far from home.

This facility isn’t necessarily local to Portland or central Oregon, but it’s still in a similar environment to feel at ease when trying to overcome addiction. When patients choose to travel for treatment at Sunspire Health Astoria Pointe, they’re close enough to family and friends that they can get home to Portland easily in case of emergency, but they’re far enough from home that familiar distractions and environments will not interfere with their treatment. These patients also retain a sense of privacy because of their distance from Multnomah County or more central cities like Bend.
Traveling for addiction treatment gives hundreds of other people in Oregon who are struggling the opportunity to recover safely while receiving the highest quality clinical care available every year. Astoria Pointe even helps its patients arrange transportation to the facility, ensuring that travel is not a burden to receiving the right addiction treatment—they quite literally get people on the road to recovery!
Treatment at Astoria Pointe ensures that Oregon residents are choosing to receive the best clinical care available for addiction recovery in the state. Together with its medically proven, evidence-based approach to treating addiction, Astoria Pointe’s programs address the needs of individual people. In addition to its medically proven, evidence-based treatment methods, Astoria Pointe offers an on-site fitness center, meditation, and complementary therapies like equine therapy and yoga to provide a full continuum of care for patients.
Full Continuum of Care
Upon admission to Astoria Pointe, patients take a comprehensive assessment to determine the exact level of care they need for their individual situation. Some patients may be determined to have a need for medical detoxification. This process, reserved for extreme cases where withdrawal can be dangerous to the health of the addicted person, cleanses the body of the effects of drugs so patients can begin their treatment plan in a healthier physical condition. Patients who need medical detox are able to do so on-site at Astoria Pointe in a clean, private setting with constant supervision from healthcare professionals, and medication-assisted treatment may be utilized on a case-by-case basis.
Most patients, however, will begin at the residential treatment level of care. In this program, patients reside at Astoria Pointe in a community of up to 40 peers. Each patient attends a schedule packed full of group and individual therapy, specialized processing groups and other complementary therapies that will help them in the beginning stages of recovery. Therapies at Astoria Pointe include but are not limited to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, motivational interviewing, anger management and family therapy sessions.
Complementary therapies, such as equine therapy, meditation, and recreation therapy are available to give people who may not feel comfortable opening up in traditional therapy the opportunity to express their innermost selves in a different way. With Astoria Pointe’s addiction treatment, patients are able to relate and build trust with each other through their shared experiences, creating a community that can provide support on their worst days.
For patients who have successfully completed the residential treatment program or patients who have relapsed, Astoria Pointe’s outpatient program may be a great choice. These patients have the option to live in community housing while attending the same therapies they were engrained in during residential treatment—they just won’t attend them as often as they prepare to transition to life outside of the facility.
Setting Patients Up for Success
Through both residential and outpatient programs, patients are given the tools they need for a successful life in recovery. One of the most important tools they can have in their arsenals, however, is a strong, supportive community of people who understand the struggles they deal with on a daily basis and who can be there to lean on in times of need.
That’s why Astoria Pointe has a thriving alumni community that current patients are introduced to before leaving treatment and past patients stay connected to after treatment to reinforce everything they learned in Astoria Pointe’s care. Once a patient has been to Astoria Pointe, they remain part of the facility’s family and have a support system they can lean on for reassurance at any time.
