Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

What is PHP?

Sunspire Health's Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is the next level of care after an individual completes residential treatment and would benefit from more structure than an intensive outpatient program (IOP) offers. A PHP combines the highly structured setting of a residential treatment program with some of the freedoms that an IOP offers. In a PHP, people attend rehabilitation sessions 5-7 days a week for 6-8 hours per session at a treatment center while living at home. However, sober housing accommodations may be made for those who feel their sobriety may be jeopardized by residing in an uncontrolled environment.

Individuals enrolled in a PHP are able to regularly see and communicate with their friends and family yet are ingrained in therapy, workshops and activities to maintain sobriety for most of the day. PHP continues the philosophy taught to patients in residential treatment program of addressing physical and psychological causes and effects of addiction with integrated treatment methods that combine evidence-based and holistic therapies. Enrollment in a PHP also provides a high level of customization with options for times and types of treatments available.

Who Needs PHP?

When seeking addiction treatment, it is of utmost importance to pick the best program for an individual patient's needs to greatly reduce the risk of relapse. Residential treatment is strongly recommended for patients who are trying to become sober for the first time so they have 24/7 intensive care and a greater chance at successful sobriety earlier in their journey to recovery. The next step for clients after leaving residential treatment may be to enroll in a PHP.

Partial hospitalization programs are best for people who have successfully completed a residential treatment program yet are not prepared to re-enter everyday life without the highly structured environment or scheduled activities that they were accustomed to during the residential stay. Additionally, PHP is sometimes recommended for those who were unsuccessful in maintaining sobriety despite active treatment at a lower level of care, such as IOP.
